For my project i wanted to create a Children's book. The book would subtlely target girls and the professions that are usually seen as men's jobs. I started to look up list books for children which was abit hard to find so i decided to start off with the books that were suggested in class.
A is for Activist and Richard Scarry's Cars and trucks from A to Z. So I thought I would look up professions that start with the letters from A- Z i was having trouble finding some professions though and when i did find one they didn't quite see so appealing. I figured i would go back to the first draft of my project. The first draft would be much shorter then doing an A-Z list book but i am still in the middle of creating the rhymes for this draft so i can compare which of the two i like the most.
As for illustrations ive tried making stick figures for some of the outlines. It doesn't look nearly like what i have envisioned but i think this is a great start for me since i have mo prior experience in illustrations. I've decided that i may scratch the sticj figure illustrations and instead write a brief description of what i would like each page to have on it.
By the end of next week i will definitely be done with the draft for an A-Z list book of professions and should mostly be done with the description of the book.
I don't know exactly how i will distribute this book but i really want to try and get it published rather then giving it away for free. On the one hand giving it away online for free would be nice and easily accessible but at the same time i want it to be advertised and actually circulate around as a real book. I can always advertise my plans for this book through social media websites to grow a base of readers that may be interested. I think this could work especially in the wake of the economy. I feel people maybe actually wanna read this book to their daughters. If all this work influenced even just one child, i think all this work would be worth it.
This would be a wonderful project to talk about with possible employers. I never wanted to be a teacher in a classroom setting but i always believed that children are the future and we have to work on them to further better the economy. This is part of the issue with America at the moment. The educational system is not worked on hard enough and the children of America are not getting a great education that can change and impact our world for the better.
Corduroy was a book that I grew up loving. It was about a bear who had a broken button on his jumpsuit. A little girl wanted to buy him but her mother said he wasn't worth it since the button was missing. So late at night Corduroy goes in search of the department store he is in looking for a new button so he can be worthy of being bought. He doesn't find one, but the next morning the little girl comes back to the store and buys him, she said she scrapped up all her money from her piggy bank to buy him. She takes him home, and sews a new button on him. And the book ends. The message i always got from that book was it didnt matter what something had or looked like, everyone is worth a chance, even if they are missing a button.
I've stopped alot of bullying in my day constantly remembering a silly bear and his feelings. It is a message like this which i hope can perhaps be read in between the lines of a book i write for a child. A girl or boy who believes they can do anything. That's hoe i hope this project can progress at the end of the semester.

Daphnie, I think that the overall concept of your book is great. Very rarely do we see a children's book that is encouraging and influencing its readers to not be confined to a certain idea. As we are approaching the end of the semester, I feel that you would be better off making a soft draft of your book with a description of what images you want on each page and publishing it online (whether that be on a separate blog page or on a tumblr). After the semester is over, you may want to reach out to an artist/illustrator and collaborate with them on the images of your book and then begin putting together the hard copy for it to be circulated.
ReplyDeleteThe project appears to follow the assignment and would be a great addition to your resume. There is one thing I did not find but you might already have it is,the title. Here is a few titles you may want to consider, Careers for Dope Kids, Future Me, A-Z Professions, or I can also be.
